Questions?:

Why do you love basketball?

What player or person motivates you to get better?

What do you do to get better?

What has basketball taught you?

Do you plan on continuing to play basketball after high school?

Portrait sketch

Marcos Diaz portrait

Pre-production:

What will you need to get images to reinforce what they are saying?

Ill just need some photos that relate to what he likes and what he talks about.

Will these images be taken at school or away from school?

The images will be taken at school in the gym and weight room.

What other equipment (flash, reflectors, etc.) will you need to make these images?

Ill just need my phone to capture the photos because the lighting inside inst really bad in the morning so i wont be needing any reflectors.

Will you need any other audio, like crowd sounds, or music to reinforce what they are saying.

No i dont think i will be needing any audio sounds if i had more time i would maybe add some silly sounds to make it more comedic since that kind of fits Marcos’s personality.

Reflection:

How well do you capture all sides of the person you are interviewing?

I think i captured Macros pretty well i think i missed the comedic part of him but for the most part his life mostly revolves around basketball.

Do we see examples of what they are talking about in the interview. How well do the images flow, from one to the other ?

Yeah there many examples of what hes talking about in the video. I think the images flow pretty well from one to another if i had more time i would have added maybe a transition effect from photo to photo to make it look smoother.

What’s the first image, why is it important to the sequence. What is the last image and how well does it close out the snapshot of a person’s life?

The first image is important because its a clear image of what he looks like and what hes wearing that connects to his life and interests. The last image is a picture of Marcos shooting a basketball the image is good for the end because in basketball that’s Marcos’s best skill and talking about college or continuing a career in basketball should show what hes good at. I also just wanted to end the video with a jumper because it reminds me of a buzzer beater.

How well in focus the image is, does it need to be cropped or straightened?

Most of the images are in good focus id say the only photos that could of came out better are the ones where Marcos is moving but since i was using my phone and the we were on a time table and the actual camera was taking to long to set up how we wanted we just used our phones.

How well do the images work as a sequence as far as editing goes. Is the editing consistent as a series or is it all over the place?

I think the images work pretty well in the sequence they were in for example i have a question asking him what he does to get better and the photo that’s playing while he answers is in the weight room so o think the sequence i choose made alto of sense. I think the editing was pretty consistent throughout the whole video.

Final photos:

city and nature
big tree, small tree

Reflection:

Describe the process, or workflow, you went through to create these images? For the first one i looked at pictures i took in the past on my phone and found one of the city landscape of San Diego and then i saw one from vista point view and thought i could compare city to nature and then in Lightroom i just fixed the photos up a bit and then put them into one photo in Photoshop. In the second photo i was just walking around outside and thought of it and repeated the steps i did for the first one.

How did the similarities and or differences between your two subjects inform how you were able to shoot and edit the photos?

In the first photo i edited for the colors in nature to pop out more to bring more attention to the nature because the city landscape is really eye grabbing and then i noticed there was a horizon line in both so i tried to match them up.

In the second photo it was kind of hard to edit the picture to the left to make the smaller tree pop out more but i think i got pretty close,

Do the two things have more in common or more differences.  Is the viewer able to discern what the differences or similarities are without explanation?

In the first photo there are a lot of differences a city and nature are completely different so there is definitely less in common in the second photo there is definitely more in common because both are trees the only difference between the trees is the size and type of tree. Yeah i think the viewer is able to discern the differences and similarities very easily.

How did you use the principles and elements to show the differences or similarities (think scale, contrast, pattern, framing, line, etc.) I Used contrast on the second photo a lot to try to make the smaller tree pop out and i kind of framed the tree with effects to make it pop out more .

Explain how you were able to enhance the mood of the photographs with Photoshop or Lightroom? The mood was enhanced by making the photo more clear but i think the mood is kind of the same but that’s ok because i didn’t really want it to change that much i would say the mood for both the photos is very laxed and relaxing the trees in the second photo definitely look a bit more majestic.

How well do your final images reflect the differences or similarities? I think my final photos reflect the differences pretty well but i would say that the first one reflects them a lot better then the second photo.

What could you have done to make sure that the viewer gets the differences without being explicitly told? Make certain key parts of each photo pop out more or make sure they are clearly visible.

What did you learn about the art of taking pictures as a result of working on this project? I learned its kind of hard to think of ideas of what to take.

Do you think your photos tell a good story? They could it depends on the person like you can think the small tree becomes the big one or about how different the city is from nature or how they are similar in a way.

What would you do differently if you could do it all again? I would put a small frame between the city and nature like in the second photo to see if i like it but im not sure because it might take away from the horizon line matching up. And i would try a different angle on the the small tree to see if i could get the small tree more visible

What are you most proud of?

im most proud of the first photo because i think the pictures in it are awesome.

Complementary Colors

Sketch:

Water fall sketch Bridge sketch

Final Photos:

bridge photo colors are green and purple pink
waterfall photo colors are blue and tanish brown orange

Reflection:

Describe the process, or workflow, you went through to create these images?

First thing i did was look at the pictures i took in California and i chose the ones that looked coolest then i went to adobe color and i took a color from each photo and found the complementary color and used the gradient map.

How did you incorporate the two complementary color into your photos?

i incorporated them by choosing a color in the photo and finding the complementary color using the numbers code and pasting them into adobe color and copying and pasting the color into photo shop and I used the two colors in a gradient on both photos

What blending methods did you use in Photoshop? What did the addition of complementary colors do for your images?

I used the gradient to blend the two complementary colors and then made it a overlay layer that gave the photos cool effects without completely changing the photo for example the bridge photo looks like it has a purple glow that look really cool

What moods or emotions stood out as a result of enhancing the complementary colors?

With the water fall it looked kind of relaxing before and now it looks a bit more dramatic and in the bridge photo it was also relaxing but now its relaxing but also a bit mysterious.

Explain how you were able to enhance the mood of the photographs with Photoshop or Lightroom? raising the contrast and detail in light room and adding the complementary colors in Photoshop.

How well do your final images show the complementary colors? I think they are shown pretty well but out of the two i think the bridge photo shows them more clearly then the water fall photo.

What did you learn about color theory as a result of working on this project? that complementary colors are on the opposite end of the color wheel directly across the other color.

Do you think your photos tell a good story? My photos do tell a good story because you can think of them however you like so the stories can be different for example in the bridge photo you can think of it as like a alien thing going on since the pink purple is really mysterious or you can think of it as a romantic thing with the purple pink kind of resembling blossom flowers.

What would you do differently if you could do it all again?

I wouldn’t really do anything different i like how they turned out

What are you most proud of?
Im most proud of that glowing look on the bridge photo

CATCH UP WEEK

REFLECTION:

  1. How well were you able to reach the goals you made at the start of the week? I don’t think i reached my goal because i was only able to finish one assignment instead of two
  2. What did you accomplish? What weren’t you able to get done? I accomplished the double exposure photos but wasn’t able to get done with the slide show multi media project.
  3. What new skills were you able to learn this week? I was able to learn how to do the double exposure effect.
  4. How many people were you able to help this week? i was able to help 2 people Marcos and Avenir i helped Avenir on double exposure and i helped Avenir with random question he would ask.
  5. How much better is your grade today than it was on Monday? Not much better because i wasn’t failing but my grade was still terrible but your assignment sale didn’t apply because i wasn’t failing.

Visual journal

Life is a marathon and you got to keep going.
Saw a sunflower which is beautiful but makes me sad because it was someones favorite flower and they died.
I was feeling focused .

Looking at the football goal makes me think of the memory’s of playing and think about whats to come.
The clouds where covering the sun but the the sun managed to shine through

Reflection:

Describe the process, or workflow, you went through to create these images?

The workflow i went through was to just think of how i was feeling and take a picture or to think of how that object or thing made me feel and capture it. Two of the photos where taken on my phone and they are the ones with the sunflower and the lock. I edited them in light room with the brush giving only part of the picture touches it needed.

How were you able to capture the emotions you were feeling each day?

I was able to capture my feelings by thinking about them and then finding something that fit what i was feeling and captured it.

How close did you get to capturing the emotions you felt in your photographs?

Pretty close i feel every photo make me feel the description i wrote for them.

Did the emotions you were feeling stay the same, or were they different each day?

They where different each day but they weren’t just one emotion for the whole day either, to take the picture i had to choose one of the emotions i was feeling.

Do you see a progression in these photographs? How do the photos change from the first image to the last?

No i don’t see progression in the photos, they change randomly.

Is there a story to it, it’s ok if there isn’t. What patterns do you see emerge as a series of photographs? Is there a pattern or are the photos random?

They’re partial stories for some of these like the marathon is something Lebron, Isiah Thomas, Dwayne wade says a lot so i think about it sometimes.

The football photo is just the story me playing and remembering playing and thinking about football in the future.

How similar/dissimilar is the editing in these photographs?

They are kind of similar i raised the contrast and vibrancy on most of them and on the marathon photo i raised the clarity and detail on some of the photos like the sunflower, marathon, and lock photos i used the brush in light room to only edit some parts of the photo.

Explain how you were able to enhance the mood of the photographs with photoshop or lightroom?

I was able to enhance the mood of the photographs by making certain parts of the photo pop out more, like with the sunflower i made everything around it darker to get a sadder feel but made the sunflower pop so the viewer can see its beauty .

How did Strong’s examples help you in creating the imagery ?

they helped me see that the photo can be of anything and to look at every thing in a setting to scan and see if anything makes me feel a certain way or fit the way i’m feeling

How well do your final images reflect the specific emotion?

I feel they all do a good job reflecting the feeling but i think the marathon and sunflower photos do the best job reflecting the emotions and the others can interpreted differently by anyone for example the look could make someone feel trapped but it can also make someone feel focused more likely if they play sports cause of the saying “locked in”.

What could you have done to make sure that the viewer gets the specific emotion without reading the word?

make some things pop out more but other than that they would have to have similar experiences with me like playing football, having a sad connection with a flower, etc

What did you learn about the art of taking pictures as a result of working on this project?

I learned you take pictures of anything and find some sort of emotion.

Do you think your photo series a good story?

Yeah i think they’re good stories but probably even better if you have things in common with me

What would you do differently if you could do it all again?

I would try and find more things that make me feel some sort of way.

What are you most proud of?

I’m proud of all the photos but i would say i’m most proud of the sunflower, football, and marathon b/c make me feel the most emotion.

Low Key High Key Photos

Examples and inspiration:

Lighting diagrams / pre-production

High key lighting
low key lighting

For your pre-reflection, tell me in as many words as possible how you plan on shooting this image. Describe everything you see in your head. Include the Lighting Diagram in this reflection.

I plan on shooting the high key photo with a speed light on the right side pointing at the person from a kind of low angle and making it cast a slight shadow on to the background. lights will be turned on.

for the low key we had and idea of making the person dark by brightening the background almost like a spotlight behind them with the lights turned off and one light far away from the person behind the camera

Final Photos:

High Key
low key

Reflection:

Describe the process, or workflow, you went through to create these images?

First we made our lighting diagrams and then we looked at examples on google, the next thing we did was go into the studio with our cameras and a speed light and set up the speed light to where it was on the diagram and started taking pictures for the low key photo we didn’t know how to use the speed light to get the effect so we used the regular lights that are in the studio.

What did you do for pre-production? What did you do for production?

Pre-production was already answered above put for the production we set up a speed light for the high key put it on a stool pointing at a person with the beige background and started shooting after we got the pictures we wanted we edited them in light room and Photoshop. on the low key pictures we didn’t use a speed light but we used the lights in the studio to point at the background and one far from the person and camera behind us just so it wouldn’t be to dark.

How did Strong’s demonstration help you in creating one high and one low key image?

To be honest it didn’t really help because i didn’t understand how to use the strobe or speed light i only knew what they could do but didnt know how to do it and by the time we where taking pictures i had forgotten what you said so i only understood the speed light part a little bit.

How did making the lighting diagrams help you in creating your final high and low key images?

The lighting diagrams helped us by knowing how we wanted the room to be set up before we got in the studio so it made the process a bit smoother.

What did you learn about off camera flash as a result of working on this project?

It can make cooler effects and you can work with it a lot better because you get the lighting where you want instead of where the camera is pointing and you can get cool shadows depending where you put the light.

Do you think your image tells a good story?

Yeah, i think my images tell a good story especially the low key one because it almost look like the person is on a stage because of the spotlight behind him also making the photo kind of mysterious.

What would you do differently if you could do it all again?

If i could do it again i would try to use the strobe because i didn’t really know how to use it and in the photos i would try to get the camera to focus more in the low key photo.

What are you most proud of?

On the high key photo i’m most proud of hoe the eyes look on the person and the shadows the speed light made on his face and behind him. On the low key one i’m most proud of the spotlight effect and how mysterious it looks.

Cinema Graph

inspiration:

Draft:

Pre-Production:

Plan out your shot – What part of your cinema graph to do you want to have moving? What part do you want to have be still? I want to have the water coming out the bottle and in the bottle to be moving and everything else to be still.

What role will light play in your cinema graph? Light wont really play a roll in the cinema graph.

What sort of mood do you want to give off? I want to give of a cool relaxing mood .

Final Photo:

Reflection:

Describe the process, or workflow, you went through to create this image? I looked on google for examples and i didn’t find any i thought i liked and could do at school so i looked on your site and found one i liked. after that i got the stuff i needed and took the video and started editing

What did you do for pre-production? What did you do for production? For pre-production i was thinking of ideas and got the camera and tripod for production i set up the tripod in front of the drinking fountain and started recording it.

Which online examples  inspired you to make this sequence? Please include these in your visual journal.
I used an example on your website.

How did the sketch of your Cinema graph differ from the final version? It only differs in that i was going to do it with a different water bottle but i couldn’t find it so i had to use the one in the video

How well does the Cinema graph come across in the final image? comes off great couldn’t even tell at first that it wasn’t the video so i think the photo does exactly what its supposed to.

What did you learn about Photoshop as a result of working on this animation? I learned how to crop videos and mask them to get the video parts i want in the photo.

Do you think your image tells a good story? It tells the story of a water bottle getting overfilled so you can interpret the overfilling however you want so the story changes to who ever looking at it.

What would you do differently if you could do it all again? I would find the other water bottle because i think it looks better and more appealing.

What are you most proud of? I was most proud of finding out how to make the effect of the moving photo and how it looks like the water stops coming out for a second and comes out again.

Forced Perspective

Inspiration:

Draft:

Final photo

Reflection:

Describe the process, or workflow, you went through to create this image?

The first thing I did was google forced perspective photos to get inspiration and I found one that I liked, I used the concept of making the ball look huge to make something that reminds me of Atlas holding the world. next i drafted it and finally took the picture.

What specific photos you found online  inspired you to make this sequence?

The photo that inspired me is above the draft another photos that kinda inspired the final photo was one of a man holding the moon.

How did the sketch of your Forced Perspective image differ from the final version?

The draft differs from the final photo because I couldn’t find someone who could palm the ball so the arm and hand had to be in the picture more than i would like.

How well does the effect of Forced Perspective come across in your final image?

I think it comes across pretty well making the ball look pretty big compared to the person trying to lift it so it gives the appearance of him trying to lift a giant ball.

Do you think your image tells a good story?

I think it can definitely tell a story different to many people for some it might tell the story of the load they’re carrying on their back for others it could be the story of persevering through obstacle life make them go through.

What would you do differently if you could do it all again?

Try to find someone that can palm the ball so the photo come out more like the draft.

What are you most proud of ?

I like how the lighting came out in the photo, i also just like the ball looking like its super big and heavy.

Story Telling

Draft:

Final photo:

Reflection:

  • Describe the process, or workflow, you went through to create this image? First I thought of my idea and drafted how it might look, then we went to the gym and took the photos which we had to take a lot of because sometimes things weren’t in the frame or out place. then I edited it in Photoshop.
  • What specific photo series inspired you to make this sequence? This sequence wasn’t inspired by a photo series but from a memory of Allen Iverson’s crossover and the Micheal Jordan shrug .
  • How did the sketch of your Storytelling image differ from the final version? The Draft is almost the same as the final photo just that they’re ended up being 5 photos in the sequence instead of 4.
  • How well is the viewer able to move through each of these images? I think the viewer can move through these images incredibly easy if you know even the littlest about basketball or read left to right.
  • Do you think your image tells a good story? Yeah my image captures an incredible move that is what fans of the game love.
  • What would you do differently if you could do it all again? Do it in the down stairs gym because the floor looks a lot cooler and feels like a better environment for it.
  • What are you most proud of ? The way the ball was captured coming out the net in the 4th photo.

Self Portrait

Draft:

Final Photo:

Reflection:

  • How did the sketch of your Self Portrait image differ from the final version? The sketch is different than the final  because  I decided to add fire instead of the gradient  and i made the photo  have red lighting and made the photo darker. I also added my logo in fire on the upper left corner
  • How well were you able to communicate something invisible about yourself in this image? What was that thing, and how well did it come across? I think this photo is able to communicate something  invisible about me pretty well. the photo shows the invisible fire and  motor that burns and runs  inside me.
  • How well does your self portrait define you? I think my self portrait defines me pretty well because I look  very calm even though i’m on fire and look quiet observant and serious.
  • How did the sketch help you make the final image? The sketch helped me come up with what I wanted to do even though its different from the final it inspired the final  picture.
  • What would you do differently if you could do it all again? I would maybe mess around more with the fire and see if I can make it look cooler.
  • What are you most proud of? I’m proud of the whole picture even with ought the effects i thought the photo looked great and im proud of learning to use the fire effect.
